Description

Mucha regarded Byzantine civilization as the spiritual home of Slavic culture. In his style he incorporated a variety of decorative motifs inspired by Byzantine art, such as mosaic works, icons, sumptuous costumes and accessories.  He created a pair of decorative panels, one “blonde,” one “brunette” that became very popular so their images were used in a variety of formats. The woman is seen in profile against an ornate background of vegetal arabesques. She wears highly ornate jewelry in her hair, which is evocative of Byzantine design as suggested in the title. The exquisite pattern surrounding the circular frame is a distinct Moravian decorative element.

Recreated from the original image by Alphonse Mucha under the endorsement of The Mucha Foundation. The lithograph was pulled on rives French-made paper on an antique press. Chromist David Copson, created this image by hand-drawing directly on to specially prepared surgaces which were then chemically transferred onto lithographi plates, one plate for each color. The plates used to create these editions have been destroyed. The original image obtained by the Mucha Foundation insured that this recreation matched in size, color and style of the original graphic work in exact detail. This print bears the chop mark of The Mucha Foundation plus the chop mark of S2 Atelier. Includes certificate of authenticity.
